SUNY Creative Problem Solving AI Chatbots

How might we integrate Creative Problem Solving methods into a human–AI collaborative experience?

The project

As part of a nearly year-long SUNY grant-funded initiative, our team developed four custom AI chatbots supporting different parts of the Creative Problem Solving process.

The four-person development team worked under a project leader. Our work included chatbot design, independent testing, data collection, team review, revision, and the creation of an instructional guide.

My role

I designed the fourth chatbot, including its prompts, conversational progression, and connection to the wider Creative Problem Solving process.

Testing revealed an important access constraint: people using free accounts received inconsistent numbers of interactions or encountered session limits. We therefore had to make each bot’s essential thinking process achievable within a focused amount of content and a limited number of exchanges.

I also helped shape the instructional guide’s visual and learning structure, supported its accessibility direction, and wrote the section associated with my chatbot.

The result

The four chatbots and supporting guide launched for an international audience and were shared across SUNY departments and additional educational partners.

The tools gave users a guided way to approach challenges differently while demonstrating an important design principle: an AI learning experience must account for the technology’s practical limitations as well as its capabilities.
